It would be nice to know which companies handle layoffs in a not-too-terrible manner, and which companies make Scrooge look generous, which is why a new job rating site called Telonu offers a window into the process through its “Layoff Talk” section, as well as an opportunity for users to vent about anything else that’s job-related. Besides the holiday itself, nothing was more hyped-up this week than the anticipation of the Lakers-Celtics NBA Finals rematch on Christmas day. Everybody was in good spirits, but as we all knew, those good spirits would soon fade away as this historic rivalry would begin to heat up. The free market does not make men good. It does encourage them to serve the consumer. It forces losses on them if they are less efficient in their service than their competitors. The free market society is not a dog-eat-dog world. It is dog-serve-master world. The consumer is the master. It’s Christmas again, time to celebrate the transformation of Ebenezer Scrooge. You know the ritual: boo the curmudgeon initially encountered in Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, then cheer the sweetie pie he becomes in the end. It’s too bad no one notices that the curmudgeon had a point—quite a few points, in fact. I feel like I am being squeezed into a mold forced upon me by those who believe in fairy tales — all for the sake of consumption. I find myself herded into a corner and prodded with names like negative Scrooge because I dare reject the manipulation of ancient stories in the name of profit. You can only imagine what was said in a pitch meeting 38 years ago about a musical version of “A Christmas Carol.” Somehow it got made, and it’s since become one of the most beloved adaptations ever done thanks to the acting and music… A “Christian” woman claims she was fired from her job because she greeted callers with “Merry Christmas”, but the vacation rental company says it is no Scrooge and the woman is just a disgruntled employee. Another year, another hopeful Christmas. However it was the same San Antonio villains, with a slightly different look that stole Christmas this year. Instead of Robert Horry playing Scrooge this year, it was the Spurs newest acquisition, Roger Mason who nailed a buzz-beating 3 pointer from the concern to crush the Suns hopes this year.
